Migrating to Australia? Here’s what it takes to be an Australian.

The land Down Under is a country of prospects, with countless thousands attempting to migrate to Australia each year. When applying for a visa, applicants over the age of 18 must submit a signed copy of the Australian Values Statement. Applicants are asked to understand what they may need if they apply for Australian citizenship later on.

Australian Values Statement for provisional and permanent visa applicants

Provisional and Permanent Visa Applicants over the age of 18 are required to sign a declaration agreeing to the following, to show they have an understanding of Australian customs and values.

  • Australian society values respect for individual freedom and dignity, freedom of religion, commitment to the rule of law, parliamentary democracy, gender equality and a spirit of equality that embraces tolerance and compassion for those in need
  • Australian society values equal opportunities for people irrespective of race, religion or ethnic background
  • English is an important unifying element of Australian society as the national language
  • Australian citizenship is a common identity that unites all Australians respecting their diversity
  • Citizenship in Australia involves mutual rights and responsibilities. Australian citizenship ‘s responsibilities include compliance with Australian laws, including those relating to voting in elections and serving on a jury.
